Here are some general tips on how to avoid dangerous situations outside your home. When in doubt, use common sense.

Avoid Violent Situations - Try to avoid situations where you may encounter violent individuals.

Be Alert At All Times - Don't become complacent because the area you are in is thought of as "safe". Always be aware of your surroundings, including but not limited to knowing where you are at all times. This information will come in handy if you need to call 911.

Be Specific When Asking Strangers For Help - Getting help from strangers is not as easy as it once was. People typically respond to a direct instructions more readily than to a general plea for help. To get someone to call the police, it is more effective to yell "You in the blue shirt; call 911 now!". Also, make it clear that you do not know the person that is bothering you.

Do Not Wear Conspicuous Jewelry When Walking Alone In Public - Criminals look for "easy targets" and someone walking alone that has something they want is very inviting to them.

Do Not Hitchhike - Use mass transit, taxis, or rides from friends.

Make Yourself Uninviting To Criminals - Look confident. Making eye contact with those you encounter will not only let them know you know they are there. It will also allow you to make a mental note of their appearance and intent.

Most fights are won before they start. Aggressors will back down if you maintain eye contact and show that you are NOT intimidated by them.

Your Attacker Is Not Invincible - Every attacker has vulnerable areas on his/her body. The four primary targets on a male attacker are eyes, throat, knees, and groin.
